Coronary surgery in ACUTE MIOCARDIAL INFARCTION - 2020

It is now proved that during last decade percentage of #CABG procedures performed in ACUTE MIOCARDIAL INFARCTION (#AMI #infarction) has significantly raised. It has changed from 19% to 28%. Surgery in AMI is related with higher risk when comparing to elective procedures.

Moreover, the percentage of coexisting real failure has raised from 7% to 17%, anemia has raised from 20% to 29%, carotid artery disease has raised from 3% to 6%.

These data come from the group of 12.000.000 patients treated in USA (JAMA Network Open. 2020)

What are the implications for #cardiac surgery, then?

In more risky population surgical technique plays role. According to several studies off-pump CABG (#OPCAB) is safer than CABG with use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Thus, fighting the limitations of less invasive OPCAB is the first step in increasing the volume of OPCAB worldwide.
