Coronary artery surgery better than stent implantation in patients with kidney disease

Here we present another study showing better long-term after CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) than after coronary stenting (PCI). This was just found in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Study was conducted in USA (Pittsburgh, PA) on more 1,800 patients who were observed for 5 years. Patients who underwent CABG had significantly better long-term survival and lower rate of complications (major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events, MACCE).

Difference is really notable:

  • 5-year survival in CABG group 74% versus 52% in PCI group,
  • freedom from MACCE in CABG group 73% versus 49% in PCI group.

This study confirms that patients with kidney disease should be referred to CABG. Moreover, we have another motivating data for investing and innovating coronary surgery (CABG and OPCAB).
